Am I required to get an SR22 car insurance due to accumulation of points? My license got suspended by the way. I live here in Nebraska.

Harold

Omaha, NE

If your license have been suspended or revoked due to court conviction, some other administrative action or accumulation of points, you will be required to show proof of financial responsibility to the state of Nebraska. If you do not own any vehicles, you will need to purchase a non owners car insurance.

The proof of insurance certificate that the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles requires is called SR-22 auto insurance. This is the only form of insurance that is accepted in Nebraska for reinstating your drivers license.

In Nebraska, like in many other states, you are required to inform your insurance carrier, immediately, that you need an SR-22 form. You or your insurance company will need to mail or personally deliver the SR-22 form to the Department of Motor Vehicle unless the insurance carrier can electronically submit the filing.

What are the violations that will necessitate getting an sr22? Can I get a cheap sr22 insurance in Nebraska?

Valeen

Omaha NE

An sr22 insurance is not exactly an insurance but a form or certificate that tells authorities that the person caught violating certain conditions is insured. An sr22 form becomes necessary when you are caught driving without an insurance. The state of Nebraska requires it at all times. Other offenses include driving drunk, driving under the influence, driving with a suspended license and committing too many traffic violations within a short period of time.

Insurers in the state can provide you with cheap sr22 insurance in Nebraska depending on the gravity of your violation or violations. You can find insurance companies that can give you cheap sr22 insurance in Nebraska by doing some hunting or shopping. The first thing you should do is to ask your insurer if it can provide you with cheap sr22 insurance in Nebraska. After getting a quote, do not automatically buy it. Go to other companies and compare what they have to offer. You should also go online since there are many discounts being offered through the Internet. Most importantly, quick quotes are available for you using online calculators. Once you get the data you need, you will then know the price range of an sr22 in Nebraska.

Reader’s Question:

What is SR22 insurance and who has to get it here in Nebraska?

Taylor

Omaha, NE

SR22 insurance is a certification that you have the appropriate and legal auto insurance in the state of Nebraska. If a person is required to get SR22 insurance, his/her insurance company sends the SR22 insurance form to the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). The certificate includes the name of the insurer, the auto insurance policy number, the effective date of the insurance coverage and the signature of the insurer’s licensed personnel. For those mandated to have SR22 insurance, the Nebraska DMV would track your auto insurance details by using a special computer program to ensure that you have sufficient proof of financial responsibility.

For those drivers who have too many points on their driver’s license, or have been cited for Driving Under the Influence (DUI), got into an at-fault grave accident, or failed to keep the appropriate auto insurance in the past, they would have to file an official SR22 insurance so that they can have their driver’s license back. The Nebraska DMV makes use of the term “proof of financial responsibility” in some of their forms and papers. This means that a driver required having SR22 insurance should be able to show certification to prove that they have the proper auto insurance policy that would provide coverage for any bodily or property damages that you could cause.

Reader’s Question:

I just moved here in Nebraska and am thinking of buying a car, my first one, in fact. What do I need to know about car insurance?

William

Omaha, NE

Each state has its own set of guidelines for their car insurance policies. For Nebraska the minimum requirement for its resident motorists is a liability policy. This type of insurance will cover damages sustained by the injured party during an accident caused by the insured. This includes bodily injuries and damages to the car of the victim. The smallest liability amount required in this state is $25 thousand for injuries of a single individual, $50 thousand for the total medial expenses of all the passengers of the vehicle and $25 thousand to repair any public or private property damages.

Another type of insurance which is not required but is suggested is comprehensive insurance. Liability applies only to the other motorist but won’t help you pay for repairs to your own vehicle. Comprehensive insurance can assist you financially in this but only up to the Kelley Blue Book value of the car. If repair costs exceed this value, the car insurance company will declare it totaled and award you the full cash value of your car.

There is also such a thing as uninsured motorist coverage. This is also not required but is probably a good idea to have. This type of car insurance can cover you in case you get into an accident, and it’s the other driver’s fault and he or she doesn’t have insurance. Instead of waiting for the results of a lawsuit, you can quickly receive medical care and make repairs to your own vehicle.

To get more information regarding car insurance policies in this state don’t hesitate to contact the Nebraska Department of Insurance. Knowing all your options will help you make a better choice.

Reader’s Question:

I have been required to carry SR22 because I frequently rent cars in Nebraska. Is this really necessary?

Bart

Omaha, NE

All states require each and every motorist to obtain car insurance as a safeguard from the possible risk of causing accidents which often result in property damage and bodily injury.

The state of Nebraska has a simple set of requirements to its motorists. Drivers operating motor vehicles in public roads are obligated to have the minimum liability insurance. This covers for medical and repair costs incurred following an accident where the insured was responsible.

Your case – where you do not have your own vehicle but frequently operate rented ones, does not exclude you from the insurance laws of Missouri. You are still required to carry liability insurance, may this be in the form of a non-owners policy or rental car insurance purchased from the same company where you rented the vehicle.

But do not confuse SR22 with coverage. SR22 is not an insurance policy of any sort. This form is a proof or certification filed by the insurance company to the Department of Motor Vehicles on the policyholder’s behalf to show that certain liability coverage is in effect.

Non-owners SR22 insurance policy may not be enough, though. If in case you cause an accident, the non-owners SR22 policy will cover for costs of medical care and repairs to damaged property provided that they are within the specified limits of your coverage. Always bear in mind that it will not cover your rented vehicle.

Reader’s Question:

Hi, my son is going to get his license next month here in Nebraska. He will be getting his own auto insurance policy as he is buying a second-hand car, too. What should I know? Are there any tips you can give as I heard several horror stories about teens and their high auto insurance premiums?

Kevin

Omaha, NE

Hello, Kevin. I understand what you’re going through. My son used to be a part of my policy, and it did raise my car insurance premium a bit, and now he’s getting his own auto insurance coverage. They all have to grow up and be independent. The feeling of independence brought about by being behind the wheel of your very own car is, I still remember, really something. Our role, as mature and experienced drivers, is to, at least, guide them in the ways of being a responsible and safe motorist in Nebraska.

Now, teenage drivers will always get higher auto insurance premium rates, that’s a given. Statistics have pegged the teenage years as a magnet for accidents. Teenagers are not expert drivers, they’re rookies. They lack driving experience and because of that, they are considered high-risk drivers. It would take at least three years of driving before they are given regular auto insurance rates. Also, male drivers are quoted higher premium rates than female drivers. So, within their age category, female drivers get lower auto premium rates.

Also, remind your kid that any accident, ticket or traffic infraction he gets will have a bigger effect on his auto insurance premium. Us adults, when we get into similar situations, our auto insurance premium is affected. Imagine being a member of the teenage bracket. Imagine the effect of a traffic violation to the insurance premium.

When it’s time to pick their car, we can, at least, tell them that certain car types fetch higher auto insurance premium. A regular sedan will do the job and the auto insurance premium won’t be so high. A sports vehicle or sports utility vehicle, on the other hand, will further raise the auto insurance premium. A teenage driver behind the wheel of a sports utility vehicle is not a good idea insurance premium-wise.

Reader’s Question:

Out of curiosity, I called this insurance company in Omaha Nebraska NE and asked why I should bother getting auto insurance. I ended up more confused that before and had this impression that they were just out to get my money. Should I even bother?

Lynette

Omaha NE

Hi, Lynette! Good thing that you decided to try your hand again on auto insurance. Please don’t let that isolated experience tarnish the insurance industry’s reputation forever. While it is true that there are some unreliable insurance companies, there are even more reputable and reliable insurance companies in Omaha Nebraska NE. What you can do is look at several insurance companies and choose which ones are familiar with you. It can be one you’ve read about in the papers, or one that was probably mentioned by a family member or a friend. What’s important is that you should feel comfortable with your insurer. You can find names of trustworthy insurance companies from this page or even get up to 5 free quotes by entering your zip code on the space you find.

Please allow me a shot in answering your question. There are several reasons why you should bother getting auto insurance, the first is that it is mandatory to get one when you register your car. You will be required to have at least liability insurance when you register your car and you can upgrade this at a later time to more comprehensive coverage. Of course, we all read the statistics about road accidents in Omaha Nebraska NE. Virtually no one is exempted from the probability of getting involved in an accident and it is wiser to spend a little money on auto insurance now than having to spend more at an indeterminate time. Auto insurance is also useful even when you are not on the road. It can protect you from theft, vandalism and other incidents that can happen while the car is off the road.

I hope that I was somehow able to shed some light on the matter, Lynette.

Reader’s Question:

My brother ,who has his own car insurance was driving my parents vehicle and rear ended another car at a stop sign. No physical damage was done to the other vehicle, but the driver is saying that he might have injuries. Whose auto insurance will pay for his personal injury claims? The accident happened in Omaha, Nebraska and my brother is from Illinois.

Billy

Omaha, NE

So the accident happened in Omaha, Nebraska and I am assuming that the other driver your brother hit is insured in Nebraska. Nebraska is NOT a no -fault state and a system is intended to lower the cost of car insurance by taking small claims out of the courts. Each insurance carrier compensates its own policyholders for the cost of minor physical injuries regardless of who was at fault in the incident. These first-party benefits, which are a mandatory coverage, differ by state with no-fault systems. A policyholder, in states with the most comprehensive benefits, gets compensation for medical fees, funeral costs, lost wages, and other out-of-pocket expenses. Since the state of Nebraska does not follow the ‘no-fault’ system, your parents policy may be liable for this other driver’s injuries. Your parents should tell their insurance provider of this loss. A licensed claims adjuster will be able to give you additional advice.

Ricky

Omaha, NE

Driving without auto insurance is strictly prohibited in most states, like in Nebraska.

But if your friend has indeed auto insurance before the citation was given then he just need to ask his auto insurance company to provide a letter (with his company’s name) to Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) stating that he has an insurance policy with them. This letter should include all the information that can be seen on your friend’s insurance card. It must be signed also by an authorized representative of his car insurance company including the position that person has. Your friend also needs to provide a copy of the citation he received to Nebraska DMV.

Once these documents were received by DMV, then it will be reviewed carefully and there’s a possibility that they would remove the suspension from your friend’s record.

It’s always safe to make sure that you have your insurance card in handy to avoid all the hassles you might face once you’re caught driving without it.
Does having a bad credit score in Omaha Nebraska make me a worse driver in terms of my car insurance premium rate?

Arnold

Omaha, NE

Insurance risk scores are linked to credit risk scores because both look at your credit information, but the two are not the same thing. While both insurance scores and credit scores look at the same five characteristics of a person’s credit report (past payment history, amount of credit owed, length of time credit established, new credit, types of credit established), the data are weighted differently. This difference in weighting can change 5 to 10 percent in each category. One big difference is that insurance risk scores focus on stability. Insurance scores are also more interested in your payment regularity than in the amount of your debts.

To identify consumers who are consistent and reliable, insurers use these insurance scores, as well as those who show a pattern of demonstrating common sense with money. People who have these patterns are less likely to file a claim on an insurance policy. Car Insurers believe that you should be able to improve your insurance score by placing importance on the factors that show long-term stability, so by demonstrating responsible use of credit and keeping your balances low. If you’ve been impacted by a negative credit history in the past, that could translate into lower insurance premiums. Be sure to talk to your Omaha, NE insurance agent to have further discussion on how your car insurance rate can be affected by your credit history.
